UK – Following discussions with the major co-operatives last month, the National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling for a sustained rise of two pence per litre in the price of milk paid to farmers.

The NFU believes that processors must raise their prices now that the pound has weakened against the euro.

Speaking exclusively to DII, Terrig Morgan, NFU milk committee chairman, said: “Last summer we wanted a price that reflected the European target price, which was roughly 20 pence a litre. Now, the change in exchange rate makes that more like 23 pence.

“When the pound was strong against the euro, processors were very quick to drop their prices, so now that it has weakened it is only right that there is an increase.”
