Snow Brand Milk Products, Japan’s largest dairy, has recalled over 16,000 boxes of ice bars following complaints by consumers of a bitter taste. The dairy believes the frozen dessert bars may have been contaminated with calcium chloride, a cooling agent used to help keep frozen products cold.
The recall affects products sold in the Kinki and Chukoku regions of Honshu and the islands of Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa.
A total of 28,338 boxes of the tainted products were manufactured, but 12,096 were not released for sale.
The incident follows a massive food poisoning disaster in July last year when 14,000 people became ill after consuming products produced at Snow Brands’ dairy in western Osaka.
Neglect of correct cleaning procedures was blamed for the contamination.
