SalzburgMilch lowers sugar content

Austrians consume twice the amount of sugar daily than the official recommendation of the World Health Organization, so SalzburgMilch has reduced the share of sugar in its products.

Since 2018, SalzburgMilch yogurts, drinking yogurts, puddings, fruit poles and milk drinks recipes have successively reduced the sugar content by 20% without using artificial sweeteners.

In the development of new recipes, the company based them on nutritional recommendations of Vorsorgemedical Institute Sipcan. The sugar component is now even well below the benchmark recommended by Sipcan.

Andreas Gasteiger, managing director of SalzburgMilch, says: “As a food producer, we also want to make our contribution to a healthy and balanced diet, especially in a time increasing motion deficiency. The conversion of our recipes has proven that it is quite possible to save sugar without having to accept losses in the taste. The positive reactions of our consumers have also shown it.”

SalzburgMilch has also set itself the goal of minimising its own ecological footprint, via a sustainability programme, where steps are defined and implemented with responsible use of environment, human and animal resources.

An important part of the programme concerns the reduction of the plastics content in the product packaging. Since 2017, the company has already saved 130 tonnes of plastic through the introduction of cardboard mugs and carton shells for cheese slices.

In August 2021, drinking straws on the 250 ml packs of Alex chocolate milk drink, Lisa vanilla milk and fruit drinks were converted from plastic to an environmentally friendly and sustainable variant of paper. With this measure, the company can reduce its plastic consumption per year by more than four tonnes, it says.
