Emmi goes for solar power for Kaltbach

Emmi is now relying on solar energy in the manufacture of its cave-matured Kaltbach cheese. The centerpiece is a new photovoltaic system on the production building in Kaltbach, Switzerland.

As part of its Netzero 2050 Vision, Emmi has set itself the target to reduce its own carbon emissions by 2027 by 60%. Some buildings of Emmi and its subsidiaries abroad are already running with photovoltaic or solar thermal systems.

Now Kaltbach also has a photovoltaic system. In Kaltbach, the AOP cheeses mature under natural conditions at a constant 12.5 degrees Celsius and 94% humidity underground. Kaltbach is one of Emmi’s core brands with an export share of around 70%.

“Climate protection and reduction of greenhouse gases are an urgent commitment to preserve the uniqueness of our cheese specialties for coming generations. Our new photovoltaic system is an example that we are responsible for this task,” says Roland Ziswiler, head of Emmi Kaltbach.

The photovoltaic system in Kaltbach is a centerpiece of a local AOP Ecoconse network, as the nearby cheese dairy in Schlierbach, which has part of its Emmentaler AOP maturing in Kaltbach, also relies on solar energy like some of the dairy farmers, who deliver their milk to Schlierbach. On the roofs of Käseerei Schlierbach, energy has been produced from solar power since spring 2021.
