Gorgonzola makers call for Cambozola ban
Italy’s Gorgonzola makers have asked the European Court of Justice to ban the sale in Austria of German Cambozola.
The Gorgonzola producers’ association says the product is an imitation which is likely to mislead consumers. Both are soft, blue-veined cheeses, but the Italian product has enjoyed EU protection of origin status since 1996.
In its defence, the makers of Cambozola are citing a clause in the rules which allows a product registered before protected origin status is conferred to another cheese to co-exist with the protected product
