FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ Vivinal MFGM approved for use in Thailand

Dairy FrieslandCampina Ingredients, a supplier proteins and prebiotics, has received approval for its milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) ingredient, Vivinal MFGM, for use in infant milk formulas and other food products in Thailand. This milestone follows a comprehensive three-year evaluation by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (TFDA).

Vivinal MFGM, a whey protein concentrate obtained through processing of pasteurised cheese whey, contains proteins, lipids and bioactive components such as phospholipids, immunoglobulin G (IgG) and lactoferrin. Clinical evidence shows that MFGM supports infants’ cognitive development and reduces the risk of middle ear infections. Additionally, a recent in vitro study conducted by FrieslandCampina Ingredients was the first to show that whey-derived MFGM has anti-viral effects against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

This latest approval means manufacturers of premium nutrition for babies and young children in Thailand can now offer Vivinal MFGM in a wide range of infant and young child food applications.

“We’re delighted that our Vivinal MFGM ingredient has received approval from Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration,” says Sophie Nicolas, marketing lead APAC – early life nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients. “This achievement not only emphasises our commitment to meeting rigorous safety standards but also offers brands the exciting opportunity to create premium infant milk formulas for the growing Thai market, with all the added health benefits this premium ingredient with bioactive proteins offers.”

The premiumization of infant milk formula is a growing trend in Thailand. In 2024, 74% of new infant milk formula product launches contained at least one bioactive ingredient such as Vivinal MFGM. The infant milk formula market in Thailand is valued at US$865 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5% through 2029.

“Introducing this premium ingredient to brands in Thailand supports our mission to provide important nutrition that supports babies’ and children’s healthy growth and development,” adds Nicolas. “Families deserve access to the highest-quality infant milk formula when breastfeeding is not possible – and with this approval, we’re able to help brands provide more infants with the nutrients they need for a great start in life.”
