Thirteen dairy producers supplying Saputo Dairy UK for its Davidstow cheese milk pool in the southwest of the UK, have been given 12 months’ notice, according to Farmers Weekly.
FW estimates this means that over 20 million litres of milk will now be looking for a new home, and this affects around 3.5% of Davidstow volume. Saputo said it will be offering support to the impacted farms during the notice periods.
Thebullvine.com website also notes that the UK dairy industry is grappling with consolidation, milk surplus, and global restructuring pressures. It notes that only 7,270 dairy farms now exist in Great Britain, down from 13,000 a decade earlier. That being said, total milk production was up by three per cent compared to last year.
