Average EU milk prices have been declining since July 2025. In March 2026, they averaged €40.48/100 kg, down €1.02 (-2.5%) from February and over 19% lower year-on-year, according to the latest comparison of international farm gate milk prices from European Dairy Farmers (EDF).

Price trends were mixed. Several European processors kept prices stable, while Ireland and the UK saw notable drops due to the end of seasonal bonuses. In contrast, US milk prices rose strongly, supported by higher fat and protein values and a favourable exchange rate.

Milk production growth remains strong worldwide. In February, EU deliveries rose 4.4% (after +4.7% in January), driven by Western Europe, Ireland, and Poland. Year-to-date EU growth reached +4.5%.

Other exporters also expanded output, with New Zealand up by 6%, Australia increasing by +0.6%, while the US rose by 2.9%. Further, Argentina saw a massive 10.6% jump, and Uruguay went up by 6.5%.

Overall, major exporting regions increased production by about 4% year-on-year, EDF notes.

For commodities, butter prices fell sharply again, reaching around €400 by end of April. Weak demand and ample supply are weighing on the market, with buyers largely covered in the short term. Additional pressure comes from cheaper supply from Poland and Ireland and abundant cream availability. In skimmed milk powder, prices have strengthened since January despite higher supply. Demand remains solid, supported by buyers willing to pay more. Limited exports from Oceania and the US have increased demand for competitively priced European product, EDF concludes.

Note: Mlekpol has been included in the milk price comparison for the first time.
