SalzburgerLand gains more GM-free producers

Austria’s fifth-largest dairy SalzburgerLand has announced that all of its milk suppliers have now been certified as producers of GM-free milk.

This brings an extra 1,500 conventional milk producers to join the dairy’s 1,000 biofarmers producing for the green GM-free label.
SalzburgerLand now processes some 160 million kg of GM-free milk annually, which is processed into around 300 products including yogurts, fruit drinks and red mould cheeses.
The addition to the GM-free line-up of conventional milk, which makes up 75% of Alpenmilch supplies, means an extra eurocent per litre for the farmers concerned, but, stresses managing director Christian Leeb, not a cent more on the retail price.
The dairy, which now earns 29% of turnover from exports, says it is bearing all costs involved in the complicated and strict independent testing procedure.
