Milk price debate signals possible anti-competitive evidence

At the NFU’s annual conference, the debate of farm-gate milk prices brought up possibilities of evidence into anti-competitive practices for the Competition Commission’s dairy industry enquiry.

Peter Kendall, NFU president, has criticized Justin King, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, for blaming low farm-gate milk prices on “simplistic” arguments about supply and demand and asks King to try something new in his approach to leaving dairy farmers.
The NFU is understood to have found six supermarket dairy suppliers prepared to give evidence about anti-competitive practices to the Competition Commission’s inquiry into the dairy industry next month.
David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, notes the government has a responsibility to have effective competition authorities and said:
