Legendary cycling event The Milk Race, which is being brought back after a 20-year absence by The Dairy Council and the Milk Marketing Forum, will travel around some of Nottingham’s sights when it comes to the city on Sunday 26 May, according to the MMF.  In its previous incarnation, The Milk Race was the most prestigious multi-stage event in the UK and the (now disbanded) Milk Marketing Board’s 35-year sponsorship remains the longest association that the sport of cycling has ever had.

Elite cyclists will begin their journey racing up Long Row, around Beast Market Hill, down Friar Lane and Spaniel Row, and across Castle Gate past the historic Nottingham Castle. They will then make their way back to the Old Market Square up Lister Gate, across St Peter’s Gate, along Bridlesmith Gate and back along Long Row to the finish line. It will be a closed circuit with a distance of 1.2km.

As well as The Milk Race, comprising an elite men’s race and an elite women’s race, there will be an opportunity for Nottingham residents to sign up and ride the route themselves on the day as part of three public rides.  People can choose a ride and sign up at with a small registration fee.

Sandy Wilkie, chairman of The Dairy Council, says: “The Milk Race was a fantastic event 20 years ago and will be just as great when it makes its rebirth in Nottingham in May – featuring Olympic and World champions and a festival atmosphere that people of all ages can enjoy. It really will be a day to remember.”

Numerous world and Olympic champions are expected to compete in the elite events, with London 2012 Team Pursuit champion Steven Burke – whose cycling team Node4-Giordana is managed by former Milk Race winner Malcolm Elliott – the first to sign up.
