US FDA deems cloned food safe

The US FDA has concluded that milk and meat from cloned farm animals are safe for public consumption.The draft policy has caused immediate criticism from consumer groups with some consumer representatives arguing that the science backing the FDAs decision is shaky.

The FDA has given preliminary approval to meat and milk from cloned animals or their offspring. Federal scientists found virtually no difference between food from clones and food from conventional livestock. “Meat and milk from cattle, swine and goat clones is as safe to eat as the food we eat every day,” says Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine. Officials said they did not have enough information to decide whether food from sheep clones is safe.
