EFSA says no to yogurt weight loss claims

The European Food Safety Authority has issued a negative opinion on Federacíon Nacional de Industrias Lácteas’ submission about fat-free yogurts and fermented milks complying with the specifications of “fat free”, “low in sugars”, “high protein”, “source of calcium” and “source of vitamin D” for nutrition claims. EFSA notes that the cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of fat-free yogurts and fermented milks with the specifications for the nutrition claims and the reduction of body and visceral fat mass, while maintaining lean body mass in the context of an energy-restricted diet. In short, no conclusions could be drawn from the research material submitted, so they rejected the claim.
