Dairy case studies competition winners announced
The Dairy Council, a founding partner of the Sports and Exercise Nutrition register, has announced the winners of a case study competition.
Entrants were required to compose a case study for the use of dairy foods as part of a healthy, balanced diet in sports nutrition and elite performance.
Winner of the award, Dr Karen Reid, presented a case study of 19 year old elite sprint kayaker who was previously unable to maintain or gain weight or eat sufficient food to meet the energy demands of training. Regularly consuming milk based drinks enabled her to gain 10kg in body mass without any significant change in body fat.
Arthur Dunne, winner of the student’s award, presented a research study on the consumption of milk and attenuation of muscle damage after strenuous exercise. Arthur recruited male Gaelic football players to his randomised-crossover study and found that semi-skimmed milk and chocolate milk provided a similar reduction in muscle damage, compared to the control of water.
Erica Hocking, senior nutrition scientist at The Dairy Council, says, “The Dairy Council are delighted to be presenting the awards today. The Case Study Award recognises the current talent in sports nutrition and highlights the growing evidence to support the use of milk in sport. The award has been very successful and we are looking forward to running it again later in the year”.
