Companies have started to sell what they call vegan cheese in Germany, prompting the Dairy Industry Association (MIV) in Berlin to act. “In Europe there is no vegan cheese,” states Eckhard Heuser, general manager at MIV. “Vegans are against any kind of animal products and should therefor kindly not try to use our milk names.”

Some trading companies offer the consumers vegan products with descriptions, which are not permitted. “Cheese names or designations on milk products are protected and that’s good,” is the opinion in the MIV:

“Where it says milk, milk must be included, and not a vegetarian substitute,”  declares Eckhard Heuser. “Whoever wants to eat vegan should be informed accordingly on the packaging. No one has anything against vegans, but this is solely about consumer protection.”
