SPAIN – The European Commission has said that Spain must change its organic food labelling.

Under current Spanish law, products labelled as ‘bio’ do not have to be organic. The Commission claims that this contradicts EU law and has given Spain two months to change its rules. If it does not react, the Commission may take Spain to the European Court of Justice.

Spain was first approached about changing its organic labelling rules in July last year.

Currently dairy companies including Nestle and Danone sell products labelled as ‘bio’ even though they are not organic.
