Faster delivery adds days to MD milk shelf life
At least two days are being added to the shelf life of MD Foods’ pasteurised milk in Denmark under a programme which cuts the time it takes the product to get from cow to cool cabinet.
Until now, MD reckoned a max-imum of 72 hours elapsed between milking and retail delivery. Now this period is to be chopped to just 24 hours. The date and the exact time of filling are to be stamped on all milk cartons.
MD says the new concept will apply to 600,000 litres of drinking milk per day. The system means that milk collection from farms by dairies now starts in the evening and must be finished each day by 9pm. Before midnight on the same day, all milk will be cartoned and delivered to retail outlets between 1am and 6am.
