Nocton withdraw plans for UK’s largest dairy
Plans to build the UK’s largest dairy farm in Lincolnshire have been shelved. Last month, Dairy Industries International reported that Nocton Dairies had submitted plans which would have seen 8,000 cows producing up to 250,000 litres of milk per day for the East Midlands milk market. But the company has since decided to withdraw the application. In a statement, it said: “We have listened and responded to all of the comments we have received from anyone who has taken the time to question and to understand the dairy. “It is a huge, innovative and in many ways counter-intuitive project. The technical issues involved will take more time to address than we have available to meet the requirements of the planning authority and consultees.” Nocton is planning to resubmit a new planning application in the near future, after undertaking more surveys and detailed reports. Opponents of the scheme welcomed the withdrawal of the planning application. A spokesman for Compassion in World Farming, which campaigns against what it calls cruel factory farming practices, said: “So many cows cramped together in a battery farm without access to grazing would be a disaster from an animal welfare point of view. It’s not going to go away, but this is a step in the right direction.”
