Defend the cheese

One of my favourite items that I have become fond of since moving over to the UK many moons ago is the cheese and pickle combination. The sharpness of the cheddar, the tang of the pickle, throw in a bit of lettuce on a quality wholegrain roll and that’s just about perfection in a sandwich, IMHO.
This week, we discovered, courtesy of Anchor cheddar, that the UK consumer is turning away from the beloved cheese sandwich, and 55% of those surveyed had not eaten a cheese sandwich during the past week. Now, that can be depressing, unless you realise that 45% still picked up a cheese sarnie on a weekly basis.
Maybe the cheese is just being used elsewhere. I admit to eating cheese on a regular basis, with slices of apple. Occasionally I stack it all onto Ryvita. I also enjoy Stilton in a salad at least twice a week. Cheese is consumed regularly in our house, but the delivery system is not always a roll.
We received two packages of Staffordshire oatcakes, and they were devoured with a lot of quality double Gloucester in so little time, it verged on gluttony. So, not a typical sandwich, but cheesy nevertheless.
I am now off to have some lunch. Think I might be chasing down a cheese and pickle sandwich.
