Danone defends health claims

Danone has explained the benefits of probiotics as new EU legislation to force firms to prove their promises about products begins to take effect.

Dr Jean Michel Antoine, a French scientist described on behalf of Danone how various microbes in brands like Activia and Actimel had positive health benefits. saying numerous advantages, including improved digestion, were possible.
A study last year by UK consumer organisation Which? concluded that the evidence for probiotic benefits was “patchy”.
The Danone information session was held in Dublin as The Irish Food Safety Authority (FSAI) took the first steps to enforce an EU directive, which comes into force on 1 July, ordering companies to back their claims.
Europe’s Food Safety Authority will decide whether the claims
