Emmi goes for dessert with Rachelli

Swiss dairy giant Emmi has signed a purchase agreement for Rachelli, a company based in Pero Milano, Italy. Rachelli manufactures and markets speciality desserts, which are sold in more than a dozen countries. This acquisition will allow Emmi to reinforce its position as a leader in the European market for Italian speciality desserts and to strengthen its expertise in a niche market with steady growth.

Urs Riedener, CEO of Emmi, comments “Rachelli has an excellent reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality Italian desserts and is an excellent fit with Emmi. The acquisition will allow Emmi to strengthen its position as a leader in the European market leader for Italian speciality desserts.”

The company, which was founded in 1935 by Ermenegildo Rachelli, began its success story in the ice cream business, before branching out into frozen dessert specialities. Since the 1970s, Rachelli has also been manufacturing chilled products such as tiramisu. The company generates annual sales of around €25 million and, like A-27 S.p.A., which is also owned by Emmi, specialises in the production and sale of desserts that stand for premium indulgence. Rachelli’s core product portfolio consists primarily of traditional speciality desserts, including tiramisu, panna cotta and profiteroles. In addition to this product range, Rachelli also manufactures sorbets and ice creams, including some made of organic ingredients.

Emmi is acquiring Rachelli, including the 85 members of staff. Following the acquisition, the desserts will continue to be produced in the Milan region and Rachelli will operate largely independently in the market. The management team will remain in the company and will continue to apply its knowledge of the dessert segment for the benefit of Rachelli. The transaction is subject to approval by the relevant competition authorities.
