Campaign group attacks dairy industry
USA – Campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have launched a campaign in the USA called ‘Got Pus?’ claiming that the country’s milk contains antibiotics and pus.
In the USA, every tanker of milk is tested for the presence of antibiotics and the somatic cell count when it leaves the farm and when it s delivered to processors. Somatic cells are white cells that can indicate mastitis. They are also present in pus.
Under rules set by the USA’s Food and Drug Administration, all milk failing tests is dumped. If farmers’ milk is repeatedly below standard, they can lose their licences.
This is not the first time PETA has attacked dairy products. Last year, the group distributed cards outside schools to try and dissuade children from drinking milk.
