New milk quality standard in Germany

The new, German QM Milk Standard 2020 will be valid from 1 January and will replace the previous standard 2.0 as of that date. Like previous versions, the new QM Milk Standard 2020 is recognised by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) and represents the certification basis for independent, strict controls of the milk production process within the quality management system (QM-Milch) in Germany.

Niedersachsen eV (LVN), the national association of the dairy industry and the standard organisation are in conversation with all participants in further development and implementation of the standard.

More than 90% of German dairy farmers are already participating in the economic QM milk system, and the trend is rising. With the new standard, the requirements for QM milk go beyond legal requirements and increasingly take into account the wishes of consumers and market partners. The number of criteria has increased from 64 to 69.

These criteria are mainly dedicated to animal welfare and animal health. The focus here is on checking for injuries or joint deformities.

In addition, increased attention is being paid to efficient, antibiotic-reduced treatment. The aim is to save antibiotics and ensure good co-operation between dairy farmers and veterinarians. There are also requirements for the storage of veterinary medicinal products, among other items
