Swiss remain patriotic when it comes to cheese
Best-ever national sales figures for milk and milk products in Switzerland include the achievement of over 400 kg per capita consumption in 2007 with cheese one of the biggest factors in the boom.
While market experts point out that some of the rise in cheese consumption results directly from the opening of the Swiss border to free import of EU cheeses in 2007, the details demonstrate that much more home-produced cheese than imported is consumed. Swissmilk, the national umbrella organisation for the dairy industry, emphasises that Swiss cheese sales per head on the domestic market represented a record 15.9 kg in 2007 (+ 2%) while sales of imported cheeses increased by 9% taking consumption per head to 4.8 kg.
