Love your equipment

Date: 03/06/2011

Equipment is at the heart of any dairy operation. Where would most modern operations be without the pasteuriser, the homogeniser, and even the humble pumps that move milk from the milking parlour to the filling machines and onwards? Without equipment modern dairy processing would be back-breaking indeed. As for packaging, it is a key and essential component of every product.
Interpack is the once-every-three years event that is a cornucopia of packaging and equipment. Most brands will admit to a penchant for labels at the very least, and there in Dusseldorf one could find labels and packages of every stripe. The new thing is the actual substance of the materials being used. Petroleum-based plastics are just one in a collection of increasingly diverse raw materials used to make protective packaging. Even whey is getting in on the act. A new substance madefrom whey, WheyLayer, is being developed by a consortium of European research organisations.
Tetra Pak, that packaging giant, has developed a new package for ambient milk. The Tetra Evero Aseptic is a marvel of quick-running packaging machinery, and has revamped previous packaging and made it economic for the high end of the aseptic market. I predict, however, that it won’t be long constrained to the milk market. Look for it in your chilled and ambient juice aisles as well.
Last but not least, China’s troubles with tainted milk are well-recorded. However, Richard Field of Orrani Consulting says that it would be wrong to write off this behemoth on the dairy front. The country is up and coming and along with India promises to be a powerhouse in whatever field of endeavour it is in. Ignore the Chinese market at your peril.
