UK farmers to add coffee shops to protest targets

The farmers’ protests that have occurred over the past few weeks in the UK are set to spread down the supply chain, now that processors have conceded and rescinded pric
e increases that were set to go into effect 1 August. According to This is Cornwall, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), says consumers are unaware of the true cost of their daily coffee. A medium (grande) latte in Starbucks costs £2.50 and contains about half a pint of milk. This costs farmers about nine pence to produce, but they receive only 7.5p, the NFU says. Coffee chains use around 615million pints of milk a year, so farmers could be losing £18m annually, the website reports.
