Action on sugar
The World Health Organization’s call for a reduction in added sugar to the human diet to below five per cent will affect the dairy market in the area of items such as milk shakes and yogurts and lead to reformulation. That being said, I suspect the industry is well-placed to meet the expectations of governments and industry bodies.
The time spent in reducing salt in the diet, particularly in the UK, has been well used. A combination of consumer programmes and manufacturers finding ways of dropping salt has had an impact.
It also shows that voluntary programmes, such as the one used with salt, can have the desired effect all without the consumer noticing the decrease. I await the new products with less sugar that will surely be debuting in the next year.
