Goals set for US dairy sustainability
The Innovation Center for US Dairy announced the publication of its first US Dairy Sustainability Commitment Progress Report. The report is a summary of the industrywide efforts currently under way to increase the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the dairy industry.
Dating from the launch of the Sustainability Commitment in 2007 through August 2010, the report focuses on the first priority area addressed by this effort: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. In 2009, the industry announced a voluntary goal to reduce the GHG emissions of a gallon of milk by 25% by 2020.
The US Dairy Sustainability Commitment Progress Report outlines the current state of carbon in the dairy industry and findings of the first national GHG life cycle assessment of fluid milk. It also presents the advancements of 10 projects that will help reduce GHG emissions across the industry. Examples of some of the many initiatives under way by dairy farms and businesses are featured throughout the report.
