Students from Manchester, UK, got the chance to explore a working factory and learn about marketing a new product at a recent event, which was organised as part of the new Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD).

The 12 students from Wellacre Technology College visited Robert Wiseman Dairies’ Trafford-based plant. The event was planned by the Manufacturing Institute’s Make It! campaign in partnership with commercial radio station Key 103.
The students, all aged under-16, have just started the new Diploma in MPD and took part in hands-on activities, including a taste test and a game which brought to life the processes that take place at the factory. The young people also had a chance to board the Key 103 media bus to learn about sector marketing techniques, before developing and recording a radio advert to promote a new milk product for Robert Wiseman.
The Diploma in MPD is a new national industry-led qualification aimed at teaching 14 to 19 year olds about the manufacturing sector and helping them to prepare for the world of work. Over the next two years the Manchester students will split their time between school, college and the workplace, with site visits, work placements and work-related projects at manufacturing companies.
