Canada allows discounted mozzarella imports

Restaurants in Canada will now be able to openly buy discount mozzarella on the world markets, joining frozen food manufacturers in having access to the world outside Canada’s heavily-regulated dairy industry. The Canadian Dairy Commission is creating a new class of milk for mozzarella cheese as of 1 June, according to the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail. Previously, such cheese had been subject to a 245.5 per cent tariff, and buyers had been avoiding this by buying the cheese combined with pepperoni in ready-to-assemble packs. It is estimated that about 12 per cent of the mozzarella consumed in Canada had been coming in from the US in this fashion, amounting to about 4,000 tonnes per year. However, this will not affect consumer purchases of the cheese in supermarkets.
