AUSTRALIA – Cheeses such as Roquefort could once again be sold in Australia.

The Australian food standards agency is looking at a possible change to the food code. Currently, the code requires all cheeses to be made from pasteurised milk to eliminate potentially harmful bacteria.

Roquefort is a French-made, soft, unpasteurised blue-veined cheese produced from ewes’ milk. However, cheese made from untreated was banned from sale in Australia a decade ago.

If the change to the food code is approved, the cheeses could be on sale again by October.
