A dairy industry initiative led by an-imal feeds company ABN, Express Newspapers and 12 dairy companies means that over 3,500 primary school children in the UK will receive free school milk until the end of July.
Readers of The Express were invited to collect tokens from the newspaper and to nominate schools for free milk supplies. Of the 3,000 schools proposed, nine have been selected from England and Wales, two from Scotland and six from Northern Ireland.
Support from the dairies was crucial to the competition. Milk for schools in England will be sourced from MD Foods, Dairy Crest, Lancashire Dairies, Express Dairies, Cotteswold Dairies and the Midland Co-op. Supplies for the Scottish schools will come from Robert Wiseman Dairies, while Central Dairies will deliver to the winner in Wales. Express Dairies, Bangor Dairies, Ballyrashane, FaneValley/ Armaghdown Creameries and Leckpatrick serve Ireland.
“Our aim is to gain support for getting milk back to schools under the EU subsidy scheme,” explained Tim Wilson, ruminant director of ABN.
