The international dairy cooperative Milch-Union Hocheifel (MUH) has announced a EUR60 million investment programme over the next three years at its Pronsfeld headquarters in Germany. MUH annually collects over a billion kg milk from its 2700 farmer-suppliers in Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. But the dairy expects this amount to increase once milk quotas are phased out by 2015 and wants to be ready with greatly increased processing capacity. Even nowadays, the amount of milk processed by MUH has been increasing by a steady 6% per year since 2000, says chairman Manfred Graff, who adds that 2010 actually saw a 10% increase in collections over the previous year. To be built before 2013 is a new milk storage complex, extensions to the processing capacity and a state-of-the-art milk powder plant aimed at the high quality powder market. More milk means a lot more fat to handle and this means a new high-capacity butter plant is on the blueprint too.
