The German dairy Bayerische Milchindustrie eG (BMI) has announced it will be setting up a production line for drinking milk, whipped cream, acid cream and chocolate milk in reusable glass packaging at the fresh stand of the cooperative in Würzburg, Germany.

As a result of these restructuring measures BMI is planning to close its production of reusable glass products at the Obermassfeld site by mid-2018.

“Unfortunately, this decision is inevitable for our co-operative’s future,” says BMI chairman Peter Hartmann. The extremely high competitive pressure in the dairy industry requires larger and technologically advanced sites with clear savings. In Würzburg the production in the existing factory could be increased with significant cost reduction effects and thus ensure the competitiveness of the entire company. At the site of Obermassfeld on the other hand extensions for economic reasons are not possible.

The reusable glass products of the Thüringer Land and Frankenland brands are expected to continue in spring 2018 at the Obermassfeld plant as before. All currently 26 employees receive job offers at other BMI locations, such as in the Franconian plants in Würzburg, Ebermannstadt, Windsbach and Zapfendorf as well as in Jessen (Saxony-Anhalt).

The aim is to continue the Obermassfeld production at the Würzburg site by taking over the workforce.

In future production at the Würzburg site, a strict separation between milk from Thuringia and milk from Franconia will continue to ensure the regional promise of the brands Frankenland and Thüringer Land.
