CANADA &#8211, PurNutra, an Ontario-based dairy producer, has launched what it believes are the world’s first omega-3 enriched cheeses.

The company says it has developed a patented process which enables it to produce two omega-3 fatty acids, known as DHA/EPA, in cows’ milk. The acids are said to impart no tint or taste and are claimed to possess superior processing and nutritional features.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential constituents of the body’s cells, especially those found in the brain, nerve relay station, retina, adrenal glands and reproductive tissue. They are also believed to reduce the risk of heart disease.

In a statement the company said: “In an absolute breakthrough in new healthy dairy products we have been able to increase the beneficial omega-3 content in our products and reduce the content of fats which are detrimental to health.”

The mild and medium cheeses will initially be launched in the USA under the OmegaSmart name but distribution within Canada under the PurNutra brand is expected to follow at a later stage. A range of milk, ice cream and cream cheese products is also in the pipeline.
