UK – Dairy Crest has reached an agreement with dairy co-operatives over the price of milk that will be processed into cheese.

The deal means that the price of milk for cheese production will increase by two pence (2.8 euro cents) per litre, and will come into effect immediately.

The announcement comes after months of negotiations with various bodies, including the National Farmers Union (NFU), which said that it was pleased with the price rise.

It added that it was now vital that Dairy Crest makes a commitment that the increase will be maintained for a reasonable period of time.

NFU deputy president Tim Bennet said: “I am particularly pleased with the way that the dairy farming industry has worked together to find a solution to this problem, which will mean that our producers will receive a much needed price increase.”
