Australia – The Australian Dairy Corporation (ADC) said Monday that sales of dairy products in Australian supermarkets are down, while production is up.

The news comes in the ADC’s review of industry sales. For the year to November 2001, total supermarket milk sales were down 2.4% on the previous year. This is mostly due to a 15% drop in sales of UHT milk. However fresh milk sales remained largely unchanged.

Sales of cheese in the country’s supermarkets were down 3.1%, but this was offset by a 5.2% rise in prices.

In a statement, the ADC said that the low Australian dollar and domestic efficiency would make the approaching season good for milk producers. The corporation also said that Australia’s clean image would serve it well in growing markets including China, the USA and parts of Europe.
