Omira launches range of lactose free products
Omira Bodenseemilch, the German dairy that pioneered lactose free milk under the label MinusL a decade ago, is launching a new range of lactose free products.
Ten years ago lactose intolerance in Germany was at 12%, but the company now puts it at around 20%. This represents a growing market attracting more dairies.
Omira, which is halfway down the top ten dairies in Germany in terms of production (806 million kg/year), is launching a new MinusL cheese spread, cream cheese with herbs and even lactose-free milk chocolate bars.
Omira is already market leader with its lactose-free drinking milk, mozzarella and Camembert cheeses and zaziki.
Other dairies established in this market segment include MUH (Milch-Union Hocheifel), one of the first to introduce lactose-free UHT milk, and Breisgaumilch from the Black Forest. Breisgaumilch aims for two markets at the same time with its milk labelled not only lactose-free but also GM-free.
Meanwhile Germany’s third-largest supermarket chain Lidl has just introduced lactose-free UHT milk, double cream and chocolate milk drink under its private Milbona label. Discounter chain Penny (REWE Group) is also in the lactose-free sector now with its new Campus brand of UHT milk.
