Milk poisoning blow rocks Poland
Poland’s hygiene problems continue. Following an EU ban on dairy imports from the country, which Warsaw is fighting to have lifted, contaminated milk powder has been found in Polish shops and is reportedly still selling.
A Polish television report said an estimated five tonnes of powder has been contaminated with the food poisoning bacteria staphylococcus but only a small amount has been withdrawn from sale. It appears the remote location of many outlets is causing the authorities problems.
Hygiene officials have halted production at the guilty dairy, located in the south eastern town of Laszczow. But the crisis comes as a severe blow to Poland, which has given the EU a list of five dairies said to meet hygiene standards and has invited inspectors to check the sites for themselves.
