Japan awards Australia 3.8m euro tender
AUSTRALIA/JAPAN –, The Australian Dairy Industry has won 40% of a 3,600 tonne tender to supply skim milk powder (SMP) to Japan. The deal is thought to be worth around A$6.4 million (3.8m euro).
Sandy Murdock, managing director of the Australian Dairy Corporation (ADC), a statutory marketing authority for Australian dairy produce, said: “We consider the selling price for this tender to be very favourable for our industry despite some strengthening of the Australian dollar in recent times.”
He added: “Tight supply worldwide has helped us achieve good prices this year. Australian production of SMP was down from 265,000 tonnes in 1999 to 255,000 tonnes in 2000.”
Japan is the largest market for Australian exports. In 1999/00, it accounted for 19.1% of total exports – valued at almost 260 million euro.
Other successful tenders came from New Zealand, France and Canada.
