Anlene, a high calcium milk powder from New Zealand Dairy Board, is claimed to be the first powder “clinically proven” to reduce bone loss.

Trials involved 200 Chinese women, half of whose diet was supplemented with two 200ml glasses of Anlene per day over a 24 month period. The results, compared to the women who did not consume Anlene, show a reduction in mean rate of bone loss at the lumbar spine by 72% and over the total body by almost 90%.

Tests were carried out by Professor Edith Lau from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and managed from New Zealand by Dr John Smart of New Zealand Milk.

Anlene has been a success in Philippines and Malaysia and will now be introduced to markets in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Sub-continent and the Americas.

Osteoporosis, the gradual thinning of bone tissue, is a major public health problem and is expected to increase with the rapidly ageing population.
