Look out, 2017 is behind you

Like a pantomime villain, 2016 is being defeated and off it goes into the sunset at the end of the week. Good things did occur, but the loss of many notables made this year a particularly painful one. Never mind. There is always 2017 and much to look forward to. Let’s look at some of the challenges – call them opportunities – and get out there.

If you’ve got a line on something a bit unusual with a perceived health benefit, 2017 will be your year. Make sure you cover it on the web. If you can get it into a blogger’s piece, so much the better. It will not matter if the scientists at the European Food Safety Authority dismiss it. That is not your problem anyway.

For example, as Julian Mellentin of New Nutrition Business points out, “While it’s true that turmeric probably couldn’t secure an EFSA-approved health claim, why would you need one when the most health-aware consumers have already made up their own minds about it?” Why indeed?

Coconut and almond are also two flavours and products with a lot of traction. My suggestion is that if you’re not thinking of flavouring yogurts with these two (personally, love them both), it might be an idea to. Make it drinking yogurt. I have places to be and not much time to get there. I need to have my dairy on the run.

There will be other good things in 2017, I am sure. Higher farmgate prices and China’s return to the international market should make this year a brighter one for dairy, Rabobank says. The US will especially be able to compensate as global supplies tighten. Butter will probably continue to see recovery. People will consume more protein, and that means more powders consumed. The US is eating more cheese than ever.

It can’t be a bad world when people eat cheese. I dare anyone to be unhappy while doing it. A very good dairy-filled, holiday season to you all.
