Middle East ghee demand up
Ghee made from buffalo milk is proving popular with Gulf country consumers, according to India’s Godhra Dairy.
Ghee made from buffalo milk is popular among Arabs, according to the dairy’s managing director R. S. Patel, which is why the dairy received orders. About 80% of its intake is buffalo milk.
Despite huge demand for ghee in local Indian markets not many domestic dairies make huge profits from the product. However, Godhra Dairy, run by the Panchmahals District Corporation Milk Producers’ Union, has been receiving orders from the Middle East and Arab countries since 2004.
The dairy exports to Gulf countries, like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain and Oman, through Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation. The exports have enabled the dairy to buy new equipment and machinery from Germany, Japan, France and Australia.
In addition to its daily milk sales, the dairy makes 2,400 tonnes of Amul desi ghee, 600 tonnes of Amul butter and 2,500 tonnes of milk powder annually. The dairy plans to install two more chilling centres
