Austria’s largest dairy company Berglandmilch has expanded its speciality cheese dairy in Voitsberg. The cheese production capacity at the site has been doubled and the milk takeover has been extended accordingly. With the expansion, up to 300 million litres of milk can be processed into nearly 30,000 tons of cheese for retail partners in Germany and abroad.

The investments for the expansion totalled €45 million.

The new, extended cheese dairy in Styria, together with the Berglandmilch dairy in Feldkirchen/Upper Austria, is the largest cheese production location in Austria.

The cheese dairy in Voitsberg was already geared towards the production of cheese specialities. Cheese classics such as Schärdinger Jerome, Schärdinger Moosbacher, Schärdinger Mondseer and Schärdinger Dachsteiner are produced in Voitsberg for customers in Germany and other countries. Growing demand for Austrian quality products in Europe, South America and the Middle to Far East made the dairy expansion in Voitsberg necessary.

In just 15 months construction time a new cheese dairy was built, with simultaneous parallel operation of the existing dairy.  At the same time, a new milk collection centre was built with four raw milk intake tracks, through which up to 60,000 litres of raw milk can be taken every hour.

“Our trading partners appreciate the high quality of local products. The investments in Voitsberg and takeover of milk help to keep the transport routes short and efficient and thus make the high quality of local milk even better in our products”, says Berglandmilch CEO Josef Braunshofer.
