Setting new standards for the dairy industry

Credit: HpE
Speakers and exhibitors are gathering together to offer the dairy industry their insights on the arena and its outlook. They range from Dr Judith Bryans of Dairy UK, to Mike Pinches, president of the Society of Dairy Technology, to Jaap de Jong, of Jongia UK, and Razan Alsous, the owner of Yorkshire Dama Cheeses. It promises to be an exciting two days at the NAEC Stoneleigh, in the heart of the UK.
Meet the keynote
It’s going to be the highlight of the autumn, at the Dairy Industries Expo at NAEC Stoneleigh in the UK on 29-30 October. Our keynote speaker, Dr Judith Bryans, is the chief executive of Dairy UK. She took over the running of the organisation in October 2013. Prior to that she was director of The Dairy Council, a position she held from 2006.
Judith was elected president of the International Dairy Federation in 2016 and served a four-year term in that role. After completing her term as IDF President, Judith was made an honorary member of the IDF and is also the chair of the IDF Task Force on the UN Food Systems and co-chair of the IDF Task Force on Women in Dairying.
Judith also served on the board of the Global Dairy Platform and as a governor of the Dairy Sustainability Framework from 2016 to 2020. At a European level, Judith is a member of the Board of the European Dairy Association (EDA). Judith has a PhD from King’s College London.
Dairy UK focuses on:
- Promoting the nutrition and health benefits of dairy. Dairy foods are part of dietary guidelines worldwide. They are recognised for the contribution they make to the nutrition of all age groups. It works hard to ensure that the benefits of real dairy are recognised, using science-based information.
- Showcasing the commitment of the dairy sector to sustainability and by sustainability we mean the environment, the economy and society. Dairy UK plays an active role in helping its members to achieve their commitment to continuous sustainable improvement.
- Ensuring that Brexit works for the UK dairy sector and that the voice of dairy is heard in future trade.
Underpinning all of these focus areas is Dairy UK’s considerable expertise in food safety and quality. It works alongside the members and with organisations such as the Food Standards Agency and National Milk Laboratories to ensure that the dairy foods produced by its members meet the highest standards.
Exhibitors
Exhibitors are lining up to showcase their wares at the event. Here are just a few of our featured partners.
Agathangelou, a manufacturer of dairy processing equipment, has launched a fully automatic production line for halloumi and grilled cheese. This transition from manual to advanced automation sets new industry standards, reinforcing Agathangelou’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and superior product quality, the company says.
As the birthplace of halloumi, Cyprus has a long tradition of producing this iconic cheese. Agathangelou has played a role in industrialising halloumi production, pioneering automated solutions that have transformed the industry while preserving the authenticity and craftsmanship of this Cypriot speciality.
Key advantages of the new production line include a 70 per cent reduction in labour costs, with automation streamlining operations and reducing manual labour while maintaining efficiency. Another highlight is enhanced product quality, with uniform taste, texture, and consistency. The automation also eliminates variability, ensuring consistent output, and offers a two to three per cent increase in yield.
“As chairman of Agathangelou, I am proud to lead a company that has been instrumental in revolutionising halloumi production,” Angelos Agathangelou, chairman of the board at Agathangelou says. “This new fully automatic production line represents our ongoing commitment to advancing the dairy industry through innovation while maintaining the quality and authenticity of this iconic Cypriot cheese. We continue to empower dairy producers globally with solutions that ensure excellence in every aspect of production.”

DMN-WESTINGHOUSE
Product quality, product safety. The guiding mantra in dairy production. That’s why the world’s leading dairy producers rely on the products and solutions developed by DMN-WESTINGHOUSE. Our rotary valves and diverter valves offer the highest level of precision engineering, preventing bridging and possible contamination during conveying processes. At the same time, they guarantee unparalleled cleanability, drastically increasing product safety while reducing downtime for maintenance and repairs.
Through years of experience and valuable partnerships, DMN-WESTINGHOUSE has gained a deep understanding of the global dairy industry and its challenges. We have earned the trust of an industry where hygiene, cleanability, and safety are paramount. In our R&D department, we leverage innovative technology, setting the dairy industry standard. In our factories, we control every step in the manufacturing of heavy-duty rotary valves and diverter valves.
Just like you, we strive for unparalleled quality and consistency. A commitment underscored by our compliance with current certifications, including USDA, EHEDG-ED Class II and ATEX. Whether it’s about infant formula, lactoferrin, (plant-based) milk powders, caseinates or probiotics, at DMN-WESTINGHOUSE, we help you maintain the highest quality standards in dairy.
Many producers of dairy products, ranging from baby formula to lactoferrin, rely on our renowned heavy-duty rotary valves. These valves come in two types and various sizes: the drop-through type (AL/AXL/AML) and the blow-through type (BL/BXL/BXXL). They comfortably comply with the stringent hygiene standards the dairy industry needs to maintain. All product contact surfaces consist of food-grade material, polished to perfection. They are all radiused and polished to an astonishing 0,8 μm Ra (150 grit), and the rotor vanes have precisely chamfered edges preventing the build-up of conveyed dairy powders.
Cleaning intervals will vary depending on which dry dairy substances are processed. To reduce cleaning time and resulting downtime, we developed the MZC rotary valves based on our AL— and BL-series. The MZC-I and MZC-II are equipped with supporting rails so the rotor and end cover can be removed. The MZC-II opens on two sides for unprecedented easy access and superior cleanability.
These valves facilitate premium process handling, raising the bar in cleanability, hygiene, and safety. The rotor body clearances are set automatically when the rotary valve is closed after cleaning.
Adding innovative solutions can take your dairy production to the next level.

HpE Process has been supplying hygienic solutions within the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Hygienic tube, fittings, pumps, valves, manways and tank equipment can be purchased as individual components; however, the areas of growth are within its integrated solutions, which includes CIP sets, pigging systems, pasteurisers, mixing skids, fabrication and bespoke projects.
With the constant pressure of increasing costs, supply chain difficulties it is important to invest in the equipment being used to process product, as well as getting a good return on investment. Pigging systems are used to recover excess product from the line, reduce cleaning time and ensure cross contamination is avoided in the same line. HpE Process has completed various projects with a dedicated team, from CAD design to fabrication and on-site commissioning.
To stay ahead of competition, it is key to work with leading manufacturers. Working closely with Evoguard, part of the Krones Group the ML Mixproof valves [EHEDG Approved] and the double seat valves are elite in dairy applications.
Key points about Evoguard valve manifolds include:
Hygienic design. Evoguard valves are specifically designed to meet high hygiene standards, important in food and beverage production.
Aseptic capabilities. Some Evoguard manifolds are designed for aseptic processes, ensuring contamination-free handling of sensitive products.
Mixproof functionality. Certain Evoguard manifolds incorporate Mixproof features to prevent product contamination during transfer between different liquids.
Easy maintenance. The design often includes features like accessible valve positions and easy-to-remove components for cleaning and servicing.
HST homogenisers share the same quality characteristics you would find with Evoguard and Krones products. There is a huge inventory of homogeniser spare parts for HST and competing brands such as Gaulin are available. Various sizes are available depending on site requirements.
The Nakakin pump is ideal for dairy applications, with great clearances and do not compromise product quality. The JMU series pump is EHEDG approved, and a cost-effective alternative to other pumps in the industry.
