IFCN names top three global dairies

Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) , Fonterra and Lactalis are the top milk processors globally, according to the International Farm Comparison Network. India is on its way up, with Amul moving up to 15 from the 20th position last year. Nestlé and Arla round out the top five. DFA took in 27.8 million tons for 2013, with Fonterra reaching 22 million tons.

Higher turnover has been seen in companies that are more active in branded consumer products, versus milk co-operatives. Therefore, Danone earned the top per kilogram of milk collected, $1.90 (€1.47), which was much more than DFA’s $0.50 (€0.38) per kg.

The top 20 companies processed around 25% of the milk produced and around 40% of the milk collected globally in 2013. This is only a minor increase over 2007, when they processed around 22% of the milk produced. The IFCN now measures it by all milk collected, not milk processed.

Companies that have seen increased milk intake by more than 7% per year include Arla, DMK, RFC, Sodiaal, Amul, Yili, Mengniu, Lactalis and Saputo. Meanwhile, companies in the US have seen stable or declining milk intake.
